The 2nd SPREAD2INNO Innovation Academy took place at the Spinoff Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 20-21 June, 2024.
At the innovation academy, the winners which emerged from the local startup events were able to participate in insightful one-on-one meetings, talks and panel discussions on business model strategies, EU funding programmes, European Innovation Ecosystems, and growth paths and opportunities for startups. The participating startups were able to pitch their business in an exciting pitching session, which was concluded by an award ceremony to celebrate the three winners that will now be able to move on to the third and final stage of the SPREAD2INNO Acceleration Programme.
The Innovation Academy was a great place for participating startups to network, learn and discuss. Providing access to expert insights and connections, it was a valuable event for all participants.

Solumar is on a mission to reduce emissions in a cost-effective way! The startup provides a novel Exhaust gas filtering technology, able to cut 92-99% of all emissions combined from Industrial, Maritime and Oil&Gas sectors. The technology is customizable, any size scalable, and retrofittable to any equipment such as a chimney, HVAC, vessel (from tugboats to tanker-size), diesel generators, or diesel-run heavy machinery. The same solution makes it possible to turn the collected Black Carbon and CO2 into reusable carbon powder. One of our six finalists, the startup located in Bulgaria has already won multiple awards, such as CNN International, PwC Future 50 net-zero report, Forbes “Product Innovation” awards, UNWTO – Social impact, Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund – Top 20 Emerging Tech, and Climate Launchpad – highlighting their innovative exhaust gas filtering technology.
Recently, Solumar was able to close a contract with Gulf Human Resource Development Company (GHRDC) in Abu Dhabi, which will be Solumar’s distribution partner in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

SaferPlaces innovates disaster preparedness by making flood intelligence accessible to everyone!
The SPREAD2INNO finalist’s mission is to democratise high-resolution information and data-driven algorithms to support cities worldwide in building preparedness and climate resilience. SaferPlaces recently signed a contract with the City of Venice to fight pluvial flooding, as well as with the Civil Protection of the Emilia Romagna region. Combining geospatial, satellite, and climate data with an AI-based model into a cloud computing environment, SaferPlaces is able to provide valuable insights in the realm of flood risk intelligence. The startup leverages the increasing availability of high resolution geospatial and climate open data from various sources, which are automatically integrated into the different layers of the respective city’s digital twin.
